Here's a better way to build a saferoom....we call these rooms "secure rooms". The door costs roughly 3000 dollars, but we deduct the typical steel frame door with three deadbolts so the add on price is typically less than 2500 bucks. The last one we did in a basement was pretty neat, they put brick on the exterior of the saferoom and an adjoining exterior wall as a finish instead of sheetrock. The room is a saferoom for storms but also doubles as a gun safe, storage for valuables and picture albums etc. The interior was lined with old barn wood to give it a rustic look inside. These doors have a panic lever on the inside so that one couldn't be locked inside. The doors can be ordered with gold painted trim and your name "Jones Bank & Trust" etc. as if the door came from days past. You can also get electronic locks.
